Battery loading lifehack?

My HTC one m7 has been draining it's battery faster and faster until two things changed at more or less the same time.

Firstly the Lollipop update came and the same night I started using a timer switch for the charger.
Since it doesn't seem to be healthy for your phone's battery to stay attached to it all night long, I figured that I could charge it with intervals, like 30 minutes of charging alternating with 30 minutes of no juice for the charger. That way I give the cells time to cool down and maybe the charge settles better, effectuating more room for charge?

Anyway, instead of being empty halfway the evening, it now has still more than 50% of charge when I go to bed around midnight.

Anybody else who has tried this or who has experienced this same improvement in battery life like this?
